Smarfren and Bakrie Telecom to Merge

Bakrie Telecom (BTel), Indonesian CDMA operator is going to merge with other CDMA operator, Smartfren, which is a merged CDMA operator, Smart Telecom and Mobile-8. The news is confirmed, but no details will be available until a few weeks time.


Previously, Indonesia has 5 major CDMA operator, Telkom's Flexi, Bakrie Telekom's Esia, Smart Telecom, Mobile-8 Telecom' Fren, and Indosat's StarOne. There was one other, Sampoerna Telekomuniasi Indonesia with Ceria brand, and it was acquired by Bakrie Telecom in March 2012.

The merger plan means there are only two CDMA companies that is being shutdown, Telkom Flexi and Indosat StarOne. Both of the company's subscriber will be transferred to GSM network.
